FARMERS' RIGHTS IN
ITPGRFA:
The Fourth Session of the
Governing Body: proceedings on Farmers'
Rights
Presentation of the 2010 Global Consultations by
Dr. Kassahun Embaye, Ethiopia
Dr. Kassahun Embaye, ITPGRFA Focal
Point for Ethiopia, and A/Director General of the
Institute of Biodiversity Conservation in
Ethiopia, presented the input
paper about the 2010 Global Consultations on Farmers' Rights referred to by
the Secretary (IT/GB-4/11/Circ1) in his speech to the Governing Body.
The background and context of the Global Consultations were presented,
as well as the results of the e-mail based consultation process, highlights
from the Consultation Conference, recommendations from the regional groups and
joint recommendations. Among the recommendations was a suggestion for a
procedure to improve farmers' participation in the work of the Governing Body
and an ad hoc working group to develop voluntary guidelines for the
implementation of Farmers' Rights at the national level.
Dr. Embaye
closed by reiterating Ethiopia's commitment to the realization of Farmers'
Rights, and his hope that the Fourth Session of the Governing Body would make
substantial progress on this important agenda item, by providing guidance on
effective implementation of Farmers' Rights at all levels. The speech is
